What to expect from expectations.

What are expectations?

Expecting something is like placing your emotions on future situations. We might feel happy for what we assume will happen, or we may feel nervous of what we assume will happen. Either way, a part of us are living in the future and feeling the feelings of situations we predict will happen, while in reality we can never predict the future. The only place in time where our feelings are in harmony with our surroundings is in the present moment. The only moment that exists. The price we pay for living in the future is the distraction form what is real. When we place our feelings in the future, we’re kind of putting part of ourselves in a simulation. An alternative reality. I imagine we’ve all seen people walking around with their phone up their faces, looking for Pokemon’s. The only difference is that in this case the phone is the tool, whereas with expectations our mind is the tool.

In a society built upon efficiency and productivity, we’re learned to look forward in time in order to prepare ourselves for what might come. I think the combination of this and the pressure we get from society’s expectations of us puts us in a rather tricky situation. It’s not a secret that sex sells. Unless you live out in the woods your almost guaranteed to see a half naked woman or man, manipulated to what’s unnatural. We’re being showed that this is how we should look. The same counts for how we should live. The reality we’re being presented is the reality where happiness comes from a smashing body, a huge home, golden watches, fame and so on. The happiest families are the ones that just bought a new couch. As if happiness is always right around the corner. We just need a little more. Ultimately, expectations is a result of feeling incomplete, and we’re looking for fulfillment in the future.

How to break free from expectations

Breaking free from expectations is all about tuning into the present moment and connect with you’re true feelings. A popular way of doing so is “mindfulness”. I would also recommend getting out in nature. Let go of control and find that everything is perfect just the way it is, including yourself.

As always, do not take my word for it. Im just sharing my thoughts of life.
